Such concentration of Gothic buildings, which are located on the same block, no other city in Europe and acquaintance with Barcelona it is impossible to imagine without visiting the Gothic quarter almost intact old town with a maze of winding streets. The name of the quarter received thanks to the preserved buildings, erected in the Middle ages and the chaotic layout is preserved in the quarter. Most of the buildings date from the XIV—XV centuries. A miracle of Gothic architecture is the center of the block, the size of the King. According to some reports here on 3 April, 1493, king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella received Christopher Columbus after his first return from America. In the XV century in the neighborhood were built the city hall and the Catalan government, they are here to this day. While the House of Canon, where before arranged meals for the city poor, now became closed to the public residence of the President of Catalonia.

In the Gothic quarter is located the Museum of city history, the Museum of Frederic Mares Museum and even the history of shoes. The quarter is situated the Palau Reial Major (Royal Palace, former residence of kings of Aragon) and the Royal square, along with St. James and a New square; the Gothic Church of Santa Maria del PI and the Basilica of La mercè; the medieval Jewish quarter; the remains of Roman walls and ruins of the Palace of Octavian Augustus, and art cabaret “Four cats”, in which often there have been Picasso, Rusiñol, Ramon Casas and Gonzalez. The quarter starts from Plaza Catalunya and together with the neighborhoods of La Ribera and Raval forms the Old town — the real Old Barcelona.
